Flint scored 66 points in Corona del Mar’s three La Quinta tournament games last week, helping the Sea Kings to a second-place finish. Flint earned all-tournament honors and scored 23 points in the Sea Kings’ 36-33 semifinal victory over Esperanza. Flint also scored 22 points in Corona del Mar’s 75-42 loss to Glenn in the championship game. Flint is averaging 21 points, four assists and has made a team-leading 13 three-pointers this season. Flint, who is also an A-student, has received letters from Boise State and Northern Arizona, said her father, Corona del Mar Coach Garth Flint. Although she is only 5 feet 5, Flint scores most of her points on drives to the basket. “I don’t know how she gets the shot up inside with all those trees around,” her father said. Coach Flint attributes his daughter’s improvement to her work with Tom Marumoto, a local basketball tutor who has worked with Jeff Fryer, formerly of Loyola Marymount, and Cherokee Parks, currently at Duke, among others.
Other top performers:
Sommer McLane, who scored a school-record 42 points in Fullerton’s 68-57 victory over Canyon. McLane, who is being recruited by Nevada Las Vegas among other schools, broke Heidi Shikuma’s 1987 single-game record of 32 points.
Michaela Ross, a junior guard at Newport Harbor who scored 27 points during a 69-24 victory over Santa Ana Valley.
Joey Sisco, who scored two goals for Mater Dei in a 5-1 victory over Mt. Carmel in the championship game of the Mt. Carmel tournament.
Ruth Vallejo, who earned most valuable player honors of the Orange Lutheran tournament. Vallejo, a 5-8 forward, led Century to a 41-29 victory over Villa Park in the championship game.
