Safeguards

As I was signing my name on the almost blank page of voters checking in at my polling place on Nov. 6, it occurred to me that an informed populace and participation in the democratic process are two of the most important safeguards of freedom. It is a shame so many believe instead that the most important safeguard is a loaded gun within easy reach.
