AIRBORNE: It’s been a half-century since a P-38 Lightning shot down Japan’s Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto over the Pacific. Today, the popular fighter plane will rise again as pilot Steven Hinton takes a test flight in a refurbished model out of John Wayne Airport. . . . The World War II craft, one of the few still in existence, was bought for $1.5 million by developer William Lyon. “It’s extremely exciting,” says aviation historian Vi Smith. “There is such allegiance from the men who flew them--they’ll come from all over to see this.”
