Little Rock Paper Gets OK to Buy Rival: The Arkansas Gazette, the oldest continuously run newspaper west of the Mississippi, published its last edition Friday after being sold to the rival Arkansas Democrat. Democrat Publisher Walter E. Hussman Jr. said Saturday’s edition of his paper would be called the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. The $69-million sale ends a bitter, 12-year newspaper war. The past five years of the war pitted Arkansan Hussman against national media giant Gannett Co. Inc., which owned the Gazette. The U.S. Justice Department approved the sale after a search by Gannett failed to find a more competitive buyer.
