Meets Canceled Because of Heat

Unseasonably hot weather conditions prompted City Section officials to cancel Thursday’s Conference Classic cross-country meets at various locations in and around Los Angeles.
The annual meets, which have no bearing on the conference team or individual championships, will not be rescheduled, City Commissioner Hal Harkness said.
“The weather conditions put youngsters (at) risk,” Harkness said. “(Cross-country) is a continuous event. There are no rest periods . . . to take on water like there are in football and basketball.”
The Coastal, Northwest Valley and Valley Pac-8 conferences were slated to run at Pierce College, the Southeastern and Northern conferences at Griffith Park and the Southern Pacific at Peck Park in San Pedro.
High temperatures also forced the postponement of many City nonleague meets last week, giving several teams little or no dual-meet experience heading into league competition next week.
