First Interstate to Close 9 Oregon Branches: The closures, expected by early 1992, will affect about 14,000 customers. A spokesman said the bank does not expect to close more Oregon branches soon, nor have branch closures been scheduled in other Northwest states. The move, which is expected to save the bank about $3 million a year, comes after an $80-million second-quarter loss by Los Angeles-based First Interstate Bancorp, a $40-million second-quarter loss for the Oregon bank and the announcement of the bank’s intention to lay off 3,500 employees. First Interstate said it expects to find jobs at other Oregon branches for most of the 59 affected employees.
