Yeltsin certainly deserves much praise but he and we are forgetting a couple of things:
Gorbachev opened the door and he did it from within the system--definitely a position between a rock and a hard place. He is the one who first stuck his neck out and very nearly lost it.
And if it were not for Gorbachev, Yeltsin could not have been popularly elected.
