NEW FLY: It’s the little talked about Mexican fruit fly that keeps Orange County’s avocado farmers worried. But federal officials say a new system is helping this summer. . . . “Each week several million sterile flies are flown into San Diego (from a Texas station) and released on the Mexican side of the border,” says Avi Crane of the state Avocado Commission in Santa Ana. “We’re breeding the fertile flies out of existence.”
