Two astronauts grounded last year after separate airplane incidents were assigned to command 1992 space shuttle flights, NASA said in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Navy Capt. Robert (Hoot) Gibson, 44, received a one-year suspension after his stunt plane collided with another plane in a race at a Texas air show. The pilot of the other plane was killed. David Walker 47, also a Navy captain, was grounded for unspecified infractions of flying rules, one of which involved his near-collision with an airliner in 1989. Gibson will command a Spacelab mission; Walker will command a Defense Department flight.
