ELMONT, N.Y. — Nauset Stable’s Serene Nobility took the lead in the final furlong and went on to a 1 1/4-length victory over Proud Karen on Wednesday in Belmont Park’s $96,450 Mt. Vernon Stakes for older fillies and mares.
The race was the first victory for rider Jose Santos since he returned from California to resume his career in New York. Santos had ridden Alywar to a first-place finish in the previous race, but his mount was disqualified and placed third for interference through the stretch following a stewards’ inquiry and a claim of the foul by the rider of the third-place finisher.
