Norwalk : Seized Drug Money to Buy Neighborhood Patrol Van

In response to numerous demands from residents, the City Council voted Tuesday to use $28,160 in seized drug money to purchase a second mobile command post for neighborhood crime prevention.

Norwalk last year bought its first custom-built recreational vehicle to patrol neighborhoods with gang problems. The mobile unit is also used to detain juveniles, deter graffiti vandals and promote Neighborhood Watch programs. Since the mobile unit first made its appearance, 74 Neighborhood Watch programs have been started in the past year, said Kevin Gano, public safety coordinator.

“The van has had a positive impact in neighborhoods,” Gano said. “Residents have the feeling that the police are out there, and there is real networking between the city and the citizens.”
