George Hadden pitched the first no-hitter in Rancho Buena Vista High School’s four-year history, and the visiting Longhorns shut out Carlsbad in a nonleague doubleheader, 2-0 and 6-0.
Hadden, a senior right-hander, faced the minimum 21 batters in the opener. A sixth-inning walk cost him a perfect game.
Hadden (2-2) singled home Grady Griffith in the third inning for the only run he would need and he later scored on a single by Chris Gore. RBV is 6-2.
“He’s been playing with us since he was a sophomore,” RBV Coach Steve Hargrave said. “This is the best I’ve seen him pitch.”
Hadden threw only 72 pitches, 49 strikes. He got one-strike counts on 15 Carlsbad batters. He struck out six. Hadden’s sixth-inning walk cost him the perfect game, but he picked the runner off base. The no-hitter was saved when center fielder Mark Pallotto made a diving catch of a line drive later in the inning.
Back-up catcher Travis Wilson keyed a five-run first inning in the second game with a three-run home run, and Jeff McCauley (1-0) picked up the victory in relief.
Other nonleague games:
Woodbridge 9, Oceanside 6--Jarrett Shawber had two RBIs for Woodbridge (3-4). Oceanside is 2-5-1.
Ramona 5-5, Imperial 5-2--Ramona’s Louis Ethington had a grand slam in the second game and a three-run homer in the first, which was called because of a time limit.
