Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus put their names among the leaders Thursday in the USF&G; Classic at New Orleans.
“The old folks are doing all right, aren’t they?” the 41-year-old Watson said after his five-under-par 67 left him in a five-way tie for the first-round lead.
“Watson? A mere pup,” smiled Nicklaus, 51, who shot a 68 on the English Turn Golf and Country Club course he designed and built near the banks of the Mississippi.
Watson shared the top spot with former U.S. Amateur champions Billy Mayfair and Sam Randolph, as well as Phil Blackmar and Dillard Pruitt.
Cathy Gerring overcame the rain, wind and cold to shoot a three-under-par 70 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the LPGA’s event at Phoenix. Betsy King was tied for second with Caroline Keggi.
