COUNTERPUNCH LETTERS : Classroom Math Series

Concerning “Numbers Don’t Add Up in Review of Math Show,” the March 11 Counterpunch article by Robert Hoffman, a producer for the educational classroom series “Futures With Jaime Escalante”:
In contrast with Hoffman’s rejoinder, I think that Lynne Heffley’s review performed a distinct service to schoolchildren.
As one who has produced educational films, I have pondered the challenge of dealing with math phobia. I don’t know how one would approach it, but neither do Hoffman et al. I viewed one of the episodes. It was incoherent and very nearly unwatchable.
Hoffman defends the series on the basis of its awards and accolades. It’s a business addicted to self-congratulations. Put forth any kind of program with “production value” and watch the medallions come showering down.
