Pipe Bomb Scare Forces Evacuation of 6 Homes

A half-dozen homes near an elementary school in the Bassett area were evacuated Monday because a pipe that looked like a bomb and had the name Saddam Hussein written on it was found in a gutter, deputies said.
Because of a school holiday, there were no students on the Don Julian Elementary School campus. Deputies evacuated six houses surrounding the school for about two hours until explosives investigators determined that it was a hoax.
Deputy George Ducoulombier said a 50-year-old man who was driving by the school in the 13800 block of Don Julian Road called the Sheriff’s Department’s Industry station about 12:20 p.m. to report the suspicious pipe.
