NHL ROUNDUP : Canadiens Rally Past North Stars

Mike McPhee scored three goals and set up another as the Montreal Canadiens rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat the Minnesota North Stars, 5-3, Monday night at Montreal.

Russ Courtnall and Sylvain Turgeon also scored for Montreal, which moved to within four points of Adams Division-leading Boston.

Minnesota’s Bobby Smith made it 4-3 when he won a faceoff and tipped in Brian Glynn’s shot from the point with 1:01 left, but McPhee scored an empty-net goal with 35 seconds left.

McPhee set up Courtnall’s go-ahead goal at 8:09 of the third period. Turgeon scored to give Montreal a two-goal lead at 9:54.

Toronto 6, St. Louis 5--Dave Hannan’s goal at 3:58 of overtime at Toronto lifted the Maple Leafs over the Blues and out of the NHL basement.

The Maple Leafs moved two points ahead of last-place Quebec in the overall NHL standings. The defeat ended the Blues’ five-game winning streak.

The Blues forced the overtime on Brett Hull’s 55th goal with 6:09 left in regulation.

Hull, who had two goals and two assists, has 11 goals and three assists in six games against Toronto this season.
