A 16-year-old boy described by police as a known gang member was fatally shot late Wednesday as he was walking to a party.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was shot in the chest at 10:30 p.m. in the 200 block of South Newhope Street, police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said. He died at the scene.
“There was a party in the area of 300 South Newhope that several gangs were attending,” Thomas said. “The victim was apparently walking to this party when he was shot. He was a known gang member. It was definitely gang-related.”
Witnesses told police that four shots were fired and that several people were seen running from the area. It is not known if the victim was shot by a member of a rival gang, Thomas said.
