Outside hitter Caren Kemner and setter Javier Gaspar on Wednesday night were named Most Valuable Players of their respective teams for 1991 at the U.S. Volleyball awards banquet at a Mission Valley hotel.
Kemner played in Europe for much of 1990, but came back to the national team to lead it to a bronze medal in both the Goodwill Games and the World Championships in China.
Gaspar was a steadying force during a difficult year that saw head coach Bill Neville resign. TENNIS
Five San Diego area players on Wednesday advanced to the second round of the 8th Rancho Bernardo Inn Grand Prix Masters Tennis Championships.
In Men’s 60, Harry Brown of San Diego defeated John Bennett of Sherman Oaks, 6-4, 6-4.
In Men’s 65, Stan Potts of San Diego put down Clare Hoke of Claremont, 6-3, 7-5, and Bob Seymour of Del Mar got by Fran Jones of La Quinta, 6-4, 6-4.
In Men’s 80, Bill Conel of Oceanside eased past Ron Brandon of Anaheim, 6-0, 6-3 and in Women’s 60 Virginia glass of San Diego defeated Piyachart Hussey of Laguna Hills, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
