ON DECK: The Angels could make their first trade of the Richard Brown regime this weekend at the annual winter baseball meetings in Chicago (C4). “We’re talking, and a deal or two may be consummated before, during or slightly after the meetings,” says Brown (above), who’s been Angels president and CEO less than a month. . . . Brown is eyeing free-agent pitcher Dave Righetti but is wary of giving pitchers long-term contracts.

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
