Pay Raises for State Officials, Pay Cuts for Poor

My Times (Nov. 16) was depressing. Five articles told of layoffs counting into the thousands. Two major corporations cutting salaries severely in order to survive. A billion-dollar shortfall in California’s game plan.
Yet there was an optimistic article. Gov. Deukmejian and the entire Sacramento crowd get a huge pay raise commencing Dec. 3. They must see some way that, after the federal tax raise, we little folk will have enough to pay them, too. Yet they must shave with their eyes closed.
