Cuba Sells Treasures: The Cuban economy is so disabled that Fidel Castro’s government is selling off millions of dollars worth of national art treasures to raise needed funds, it was reported Friday by the Journal of Art, an art monthly. Two important Spanish impressionist works from the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana--Antonio Sorolla’s “Bulls Embarking on a Boat” and “Beach in Valencia”--were recently sold at Sotheby’s in London for a total of $4.5 million. The art journal said the exportation of artworks and antiques from Cuba to Europe, strictly prohibited by Cuban law, has become common under the aegis of Cubalse, a state-run agency.
