NEW DELHI — Five more Indian students died, several other people committed suicide or attempted it and a police officer was killed today in unrelenting protests against a government plan to reserve jobs for low-caste Hindus.
Four suicides--none of them students--were reported in the northern state of Haryana, which has seen some of the most violent opposition to the plan.
Anuradha Thakur, a student and a niece of a former government official, died in Bhiwani of self-inflicted burns sustained last week. Three young male students in various parts of the state committed suicide by consuming poison. And in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, a student who set himself on fire last week died. He was the first student in south India to kill himself in the job protests.
