SYDNEY, Australia — Dame Joan Sutherland, hailed as “La Stupenda” by opera fans worldwide, ended a 40-year career with a soprano rendition of “Home Sweet Home” at a streamer-decked Sydney Opera House today.
In a tumultuous farewell Sutherland received a 15-minute standing ovation from 1,500 opera lovers including Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke.
