Security will be tight when the Asian Games open today in Beijing, but police have promised to keep a low profile.
Just one day before the 16-day Games were scheduled to open, police searched pedestrians at random. Travelers in and out of the main train station had to pass through metal detectors as security officers X-rayed their luggage.
Five-thousand athletes and 10,000 journalists and visitors are expected to attend the Games.
