ROWLAND HEIGHTS — Senior running back Mike Sullivan rushed for 181 yards and one touchdown, leading Sunny Hills High School past host Rowland, 21-6, Friday night.
Sullivan capped a 13-carry performance with an impressive 88-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 45 seconds remaining in the game to seal the victory.
Teammate Kenny Overby, who along with Brian Pizula (who graduated) sometimes overshadowed Sullivan last season, carried 19 times for 89 yards and one touchdown.
Senior quarterback Hakeim McKenzie threw for the other Sunny Hills touchdown, a 45-yard pass to Stephen Choe in the third quarter.
Despite its strength on offense, it became clear early in the game that Sunny Hills’ defense was suspect. The Lancers surrendered a 37-yard touchdown pass to the Raiders on the game’s first possession.
Sunny Hills took a 7-6 lead with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter on Overby’s score, and had a chance to increase that margin after receiver David Wilde tipped and caught a McKenzie pass while on his back.
The 42-yard pass play put the Lancers on the Raiders’ five, where the scoring opportunity was squelched.
