Digital Equipment Corp. to Terminate 6,000: A long-expected voluntary severance program at the computer maker will slash up to 6,000 employees from its worldwide work force. The job loss will probably be substantial in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where the giant firm has more than half of its U.S. workers. The cuts, combined with attrition and restricted hiring, would bring the Maynard, Mass.-based company’s worldwide employment total to about 118,000 from the current 124,000.
