Two of Japan’s top distance runners and three other people were killed in an automobile accident in Hokkaido, police said.
The runners were Yutaka Kanai, 30, eighth in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic 10,000 meter race, and marathoner Tomoyuki Taniguchi, 29.
Police said a van carrying Kanai and Taniguchi and four other people collided head-on with a truck shortly after midnight. Four people in the van and the truck driver were killed.
