CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble Co. says it plans to more than double the size of its bar soap operation at the plant where it has made Ivory soap since 1886.
The project will cost about $200 million and will include a 65,000-square-foot expansion to the Ivorydale plant in the suburb of St. Bernard, the company said. Construction is to begin in October and should finish by next summer.
“This project will ensure that we have a state-of-the-art soap operation that is ready to meet business and competitive challenges well into our second century,” said Ken McWhorter, the site manager.
The Ivorydale plant employs about 750 people. The expansion will create about 50 new jobs, P&G; said.
Procter & Gamble makes a large variety of food, personal-care and consumer products. It reported sales of $21.4 billion in the past fiscal year.
Along with Ivory soap, the Ivorydale complex makes powdered laundry detergent, household cleaning products, food and industrial chemicals.
