P.M. BRIEFING : EC to Brazil: Save Rain Forests
- Share via
The European Community today called for urgent talks with Brazil on saving the Amazon rain forests.
The 12 EC leaders, reflecting heightened political concern over ecological issues, said it is vital to launch talks on how to save the Amazon rain forest, which is being chopped or burned down at twice the average rate of destruction in the 1980s.
Drawing up a detailed aid plan, the EC leaders said top priorities in the shrinking jungle are “debt for forest conservation exchanges, codes of conduct for timber-importing industries and the additional resources necessary to enable the forests to be preserved and managed on a sustainable basis.”
Environmentalists say only 0.15% of the timber imported into the European Community comes from responsibly managed forests that are replanted and run sustainably.
