Yolanda and the Thief (TNT Sunday at 9:50 p.m.): This extravagantly lush Vincente Minnelli-directed fairy tale with Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer is one of the most venturesome of the big ‘40s musicals and features dazzling dance sequences staged by Eugene Loring and a bathtub sequence that out DeMilles DeMille. (2:25)
The Rain People (A&E; Monday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m.): Francis Coppola’s sensitive, early (1969) film stars Shirley Knight as a housewife trying to get away from her own life and James Caan as the brain-damaged young man she runs into; intense and affecting. (1:42)
Heaven’s Gate (Channel 5 Saturday at 7 p.m.): Michael Cimino’s 1980 Western, in either of its cuts (this is the short version), was the most controversial movie of the ‘80s, a stunning landmark film in which its central theme is the betrayal of the American dream by those in power. With Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken and Isabelle Huppert. (3:00)
