CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Van de Kamp Ballot Measure Qualifies

The so-called “clean government initiative” proposed by Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp has qualified for the statewide election in November. Secretary of State March Fong Eu placed the proposition on the ballot after 684,200 signatures on initiative petitions were verified--89,000 more than needed. If approved, the measure would prevent state legislators and Board of Equalization members from serving more than 12 consecutive years in office, and forbid future governors and other statewide elected officials from serving more than eight years.
