‘Tracy’ Does $22 Million at Box Office

Warren Beatty’s “Dick Tracy” became the highest grossing opening film in Walt Disney Studios’ history over the weekend, but its estimated $22 million total is just a little more than half of what Warner Bros.’ “Batman” took in during its opening weekend a year ago.
Industry sources cautioned against making too much of the comparative opening grosses of “Dick Tracy” and “Batman” since “Batman” opened a week later last summer, after most schools had let out for the season.
At the same time, they say, the $22 million estimate on “Dick Tracy” will have to be adjusted downward slightly because the figure includes the retail price of T-shirts sold by exhibitors as admission tickets around the country. The shirts were reportedly sold for anywhere from $12 to $20 each and were necessary at about 2,000 theaters hosting special midnight screenings Thursday.
In any event, “Dick Tracy” shatters Disney’s previous opening weekend record of $14 million set two summers ago by “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.”
