OAKLAND — An all-star high school basketball player who was due to graduate next week collapsed on the court and died Wednesday during a scrimmage.
Weston Hatch Jr., 17, passed out in the boys’ gym at Fremont High School at about 2:50 p.m., just after he dunked the ball and began running up court. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Highland General Hospital in Oakland, said school district spokeswoman Sheri Willis.
The cause of death was not immediately determined, the coroner’s office said. Hatch’s sister, Kwane Durden, 21, said Hatch had no history of heart or breathing disorders.
Hatch, a 6-foot-6 center, averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a game and helped lead Fremont to the championship game of the Oakland Athletic League playoffs.
