WASHINGTON — Barbara Bush welcomed museum operators to the White House today, telling them they “hold the cultural legacy of America.”
“Museums have always been such a rich and enlightening part of my life,” Mrs. Bush told more than 300 museum directors.
The directors attending the White House reception had been given grants by the Institute of Museum Services, an independent federal agency funded by Congress that awards $25 million in grants each year to help museums operate.
“All ages, all income levels, all cultures, everyone is welcome (at museums). This universal accessibility is crucial,” Mrs. Bush said. “You hold the cultural legacy of America, and you make unique contributions to the cultural literacy of our people.”
The institute said its grants are based on excellence in operating standards.
