A Pitch for Batting Cage

Regarding the article (April 12) on the Glendale Batting Cage. Let me get this straight: A batting cage that has stood for 25 years is in danger of closure because residents of a 4-year-old apartment complex, built immediately adjacent to a commercial zone by some unscrupulous developer, are suddenly offended by noise; a snack bar is an “illegal building” and the netting on the cage, replaced a year ago, is “old and deteriorated.”
I know cages near the apartments were shut down and new netting was installed. You see, I live near the Glendale Batting Cage and walk past it nearly every day.
Every day I see kids, adolescents and adults, male and female, spending their time in healthy enjoyment of our national pastime. I am compelled to wonder, wouldn’t the city of Glendale rather see them here, participating in what we teachers call a “mainstream activity,” than loitering around another mini-mall?
By the way, Assistant City Atty. Ron Braden, when you move to prosecute the owner, please do not say “the People vs . . . “ It just isn’t so.
