At once unpredictable yet captivating, Gillian Armstrong’s 1984 film was based on an actual 1901 incident involving the dutiful wife (Diane Keaton) of the warden of Pittsburgh’s forbidding Allegheny County Jail, whose life is transformed when she encounters two new prisoners (Mel Gibson and Matthew Modine) sentenced to hang in a controversial case. What happens unfolds with completely credible psychological validity.

This 1939 classic, directed by George Cukor and based on Clare Booth Luce’s play, stars Norma Shearer as the perfect suburban wife whose husband has nevertheless been snared by a hard-as-nails Joan Crawford. There’s not a man in sight in this delightful comedy, but its array of stars includes Paulette Goddard and Rosalind Russell.
