DESERT BLOOM
In his 1986 film, writer-director Eugene Corr does what you never thought possible: makes you feel nostalgic about being 13 in the 1950s. Corr deftly parallels a coming-of-age story with the dawning of the nuclear era. The cast includes Annaaeth Gish, Jon Voight, Ellen Barkin and JoBeth Williams.

MRS. SOFFEL
At once unpredictable yet captivating, Gillian Armstrong’s 1984 film was based on an actual 1901 incident involving the dutiful wife (Diane Keaton) of the warden of Pittsburgh’s forbidding Allegheny County Jail, whose life is transformed when she encounters two new prisoners (Mel Gibson and Matthew Modine) sentenced to hang in a controversial case. What happens unfolds with completely credible psychological validity.
