Fallbrook’s Noon Breaks State Record in Shot Putt

In his first meet of the season, Brent Noon of Fallbrook High set a state record in the shot put with a throw of 69-feet-11 1/2. The throw came in Thursday’s dual meet at Orange Glen, won by Orange Glen, 79-57.

Noon held the previous state record of 69-8 1/4, set last May 4.

Noon also threw the discus 194-7, which is 13 inches off the section record (195-8), set by Billy Joe Winchester of Mt. Miguel in 1970.

BASKETBALL

Christian Heritage College advanced to the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Assn. Championships, defeating Concordia, Ore., 119-81, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Junior center Rob Meeter of Christian High equalled his single-game shooting percentage record by making all seven of his field goal attempts. He finished with 14 points. Guard Rundy Foster scored 10 of his 20 points in the opening seven minutes, helping the Hawks (31-6) to a 22-7 lead. Shaun Hartley paced Concordia (14-21) with 38 points.

Christian Heritage will meet Bethel, Ind., in tonight’s semifinals. Tournament host Tennessee Temple meets Cedarville, Ohio, in the other semifinal.

FOOTBALL

Reserve Brigham Young quarterback Brett Salisbury, a sophomore from Orange Glen High School, has left school for personal reasons and will not be part of the 1990 team.

Salisbury, 6-3, 190 pounds, had been competing in spring practice for a backup spot behind Ty Detmer. Coach LaVell Edwards said 6-4, 240-pound sophomore Brent Smith will fill a backup role.

MEN’S TENNIS

Northern Arizona defeated Pt. Loma Nazarene College, 7-2. John Norton got a singles victory for PLNC (4-9), defeating Celin Serbo, 6-4, 6-4.

UC San Diego, ranked fifth in the nation in Division III with a 5-6 record, lost to Navy, 5-1. Chris Belloli won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, over Chris Thompson, for the lone Triton victory.

MEN’S SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League defeated University of San Diego, 2-1, at Torero Stadium. The Nomads got scores from Papo and Albaro Ibanez. USD freshman Sean Pinnell, a Mt. Carmel graduate, scored in the final 10 minutes.
