Baby Pushed Into Trash Compactor Is Rescued

NEW YORK — A newborn was pushed down a chute into a trash compactor in the basement of a housing project, where a caretaker heard his cries and rescued the infant Saturday by shutting off the machine, police said. The baby was listed in guarded condition at a local hospital. Police were looking for the baby’s mother.
