2 Hospitalized After Patrol Car Hits Van

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s patrol car struck a van that was turning in front of it in Lancaster Wednesday night, injuring two deputies and three other people, including two young girls, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 6:55 p.m. Wednesday at 20th Street East and Avenue J-8, Deputy Marty Shearer said. Shearer said the patrol car was heading north on 20th Street East when a van carrying a woman and two girls turned left in front of it.

Deputy Jeffrey Biehl, 30, was in fair condition Thursday at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center with broken ribs, hospital spokeswoman Frankie Richards said. Deputy Johnie Jones, 29, was treated at the same hospital for bruised knees and released, she said.

Jessica Garcia, 7, remained at the hospital Thursday in fair condition with a head injury, Richards said. Theresa Renee Garcia, 4, was treated and released Wednesday evening, as was Kelly Garcia, 25, the driver of the van, Richards said. It was not known whether the Garcias are related, officials said.

Kelly Garcia was cited for failure to yield the right of way during a turn, deputies said.
