Matt Biondi, six-time U.S. Olympic champion, lost the 50-meter freestyle race to Nils Rudolph of East Germany at an international swimming meet in East Berlin.
Rudolph, a bronze medalist at last year’s European Championships, was timed in 22.48 seconds. Biondi was a distant second at 23.24.
