Indian officials said that weightlifter Subrata kumar Paul, winner of two silver medals and one bronze medal in the 67.5-kilogram category at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand, was on his way home to Calcutta after being caught in random testing for use of an anabolic steroid.
A second athlete who tested positive was not identified pending a second test.
Later in Auckland, Australia’s Glen Housman won the 1,500-meter freestyle swim in 14:55.25, short of the world record of 14:54.76 set by the Soviet Union’s Vladimir Salnikov in 1983.
