Jay Berger was selected Sunday to replace injured Aaron Krickstein in next weekend’s first-round Davis Cup match between the United States and Mexico at La Costa.
Berger, ranked No. 9 in the world, and No. 4 Brad Gilbert will be the U.S. singles players. Gilbert was also a substitute. He replaced Michael Chang, who separated a bone in his hip in December.
U.S. Davis Cup captain Tom Gorman said he contacted Berger after Krickstein pulled a groin muscle in the Australian Open 10 days ago.
“I’m glad he was available on such short notice,” Gorman said.
Berger’s other Davis Cup experience was in 1988, when he won his match in a 3-0 victory over Peru.
