California IN BRIEF : VALLEJO : Whale’s Death Laid to Lung Infection

A severe lung infection caused the death of Kogi, a young pygmy sperm whale found on a beach near Santa Cruz on Aug. 31, a necropsy disclosed. The necropsy was performed by Dr. Joe Groff of UC Davis and Dr. Laurie Gage of Marine World Africa USA and the California Marine Mammal Center. Kogi was kept under 24-hour care, first at the UC Santa Cruz Long Marine Laboratory and later at the Marine World facility in Vallejo, where he died.
