SAN FRANCISCO — The delay to the World Series caused by the Bay Area’s earthquake also has caused the memorial service for the late Commissioner Bart Giamatti to be pushed back.
The memorial service has been rescheduled for Nov. 15 in New York’s Carnegie Hall. It was scheduled for Oct. 31, but Game 6 of the World Series would be played that night in Oakland, if it is needed. On the original schedule, Game 6 would have been played last Saturday.
Giamatti, the former president of Yale University, died of a heart attack on Sept. 1 at his home in Edgartown, Mass. He was National League president before becoming baseball commissioner last April 1.
