HUNTINGTON BEACH — Doug Cunningham scored on a pair of six-yard touchdown runs to lead Huntington Beach High School over Marina, 21-14, in a Sunset League game Friday night.
Huntington Beach took the lead one minute into the game when Cunningham scored his first touchdown and Matt Acocello kicked the extra point. In the second quarter, Cunningham scored, but the conversion attempt was blocked, leaving the Oilers (5-1, 2-0 in league play) with a 13-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Marina’s Shawn Fulford picked up a Huntington Beach fumble and ran 27 yards for a touchdown. Eric Mifflin’s kick was good, and Marina (2-5, 0-2) trailed, 13-7.
Huntington’s Jeff Gibson collaborated with Russell Eisenman for a 74-yard touchdown pass play and Gibson hit Cary Mitchell with the conversion pass to end the half and Huntington’s scoring.
In the third quarter, Marina’s David Schultz passed 65 yards to Darren Fields for a touchdown, with the conversion by Mifflin.
“Marina got excited and played hard (in the second half),” Huntington Beach Coach George Pascoe said. “They played really well, (but) we did a good job of running the football.”
