Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel: The Wheeling, W.Va.-based steel company said third-quarter profit fell almost 52% to $46.5 million. Sales totaled $297.7 million, up 9% from a year ago. Operating net income fell 48% from the year-ago period, and both the 1989 and 1988 periods included extraordinary credits. The company had said earlier that third-quarter earnings would be hurt by continuing coal mine strikes.
