United Telecom Announces Consolidation: United Telecommunications said it will consolidate operations with its US Sprint long-distance company to make the corporation more efficient as Sprint continues to grow. United Telecom now owns 80.1% of Sprint, the nation’s third-largest long-distance company. GTE Corp. of Stamford, Conn., owns 19.9%. Under the realignment of the two companies, William T. Esrey, president and chief executive of both United Telecom and Sprint, will remain in his United Telecom post but switch to chairman and CEO of Sprint. Ronald T. LeMay, 43, will become president of Sprint and president of United Telecom’s long-distance division.
