Area Roundup : Wheelchair Tennis Tournament Starts Today in Irvine

The U.S. Open Championship of wheelchair tennis begins today at the Racquet Club of Irvine. The 10-day competition will feature 250 international players.
A rapidly growing sport, wheelchair tennis has the same rules as the U.S. Tennis Assn. except players are allowed two bounces of the ball.
Today’s opening ceremonies begin at 9, followed by an international team competition patterned after the Davis Cup. Preliminary rounds for teams from the United States, England, France, Holland, Israel, Australia, West Germany, Sweden, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada will continue until 5 p.m. Finals will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Individual competition in men’s and women’s singles, featuring defending champions Randy Snow of Birmingham, Ala., and Monique VadenBosche of Holland, begins Monday, as does mixed doubles. Finals are set for Oct. 14 and 15.
