Eight people were injured Sunday morning when a bus carrying 63 illegal aliens from the U.S. Border Patrol’s San Clemente checkpoint back to Mexico crashed into an off-ramp embankment.
The bus apparently ran off the southbound 805 Freeway at the San Ysidro Boulevard off-ramp in San Ysidro around 6 a.m, according to the California Highway Patrol.
“The bus driver lost control of the bus for unknown reasons,” said Michael Gregg, a supervisory Border agent in San Diego. “The bus did not turn over, but it did land on the embankment. The highway patrol is investigating why this happened.”
Treated for Minor Injuries
Six aliens and two detention enforcement officers were treated for minor injuries at e Chula Vista Community Hospital. The driver of the bus suffered multiple fractures, according to officials.
At the time of the accident, the aliens were being transported back to the Mexican border after their apprehension during the night at the San Clemente checkpoint, Gregg said.
He added that the aliens were to be returned to Mexico as planned after all were released from the hospital.
