NEWS NOTES: Billy Idol’s version of the Doors’ classic “L.A. Woman” will be the theme song for a Los Angeles-set police drama, “L.A. Takedown,” which airs tonight on KNBC Channel 4. The two-hour TV movie was written and directed by Michael Mann, whose “Miami Vice” series also used rock music extensively. The lead role is handled by Scott Plank, who was a featured dancer in Idol’s 1984 “Flesh for Fantasy” video. . . . Mo Ostin, the venerable, low-profile chairman of Warner Bros. Records, threw a party at his Pacific Palisades home last week to celebrate the re-signing of multi-platinum perennials Van Halen. Ostin told his 75 guests about the first time he saw the group during a circa 1977 trek to the now-defunct Hollywood rock club the Starwood: “I heard them onstage and turned to my colleagues and said something crass: ‘They sound like money,’ ” They still do. The re-signing was reportedly one of the largest financial commitments Warner Bros. has ever made to an act.

Kingdom Come, the Led Zeppelin sound-alikes who had one of the top-selling debut albums of 1988, have called it quits. The break-up was precipitated by the defection of drummer James Kottak. . . . Martha Davis, Kathy Valentine and Michael Des Barres are among the artists set to perform at the Reach Out Festival, designed to raise funds for Covenant House California, a Hollywood shelter for homeless kids. The show, at 7 tonight at Fairfax High School, is also slated to feature such actors as Katey Sagal and River Phoenix.
